This movie poster features Dwayne Johnson. Dwayne is a former wrestler and is renowned for his masculinity and 'hard man' role in movies and wrestling. This reputation is represented in this poster due to the camera angle and pose of the character. This medium long-shot photo has been taken at a low angle providing the viewer of the poster with the impression that the character is very powerful or dominant. The lighting of the photo is soft which is important as if it was hard lighting, Dwayne's facial expressions would have been poorly visible due to the already dark background, so the soft lighting allows the viewer to see the facial expression of the actor and build up more effect. The camera angle is also slanted and due to what is happening in the background of the photo, a dramatic effect is created. The pose the character is in is a dramatic and aggressive one; the character is clenching his fist and tensing his arm suggesting anger and frustration. The facial expression is also very serious and suggests to the viewer that the character is being bothered or troubled about something, which provides the viewer with suspense making the viewer of the poster want to view the film and see what actually happens. The Mise-en-scene of this poster creates a dark and negative attitude for the viewer. This is created through the use of the characters clothing, the horrific scenes behind the character and the eerie location of where the photo has been taken. The clothes the character is wearing are very dark and masculine; this is important for the viewer as if the character was wearing brightly coloured clothing the character would have been out of place and the photo would have been less dramatic and therefore less effective. The collision behind him shows the viewer that the film is a fast pace, high explosive action film and due to the fact he is also wearing very masculine clothes it suggests that the target audience for this film is males, preferably aged 16-35.

FourFourTwo is a football magazine mainly aimed at the male audience. The image used on this cover shows Balotelli, a footballer renowned for his bad behaviour on and off the pitch. This picture shows Balotelli as a strong and independent person; By the way he is standing, he is trying to show his masculinity through standing straight and slightly opening out his arms; this is a stereotypical representation of men in todays media as men are made to look 'hard' and 'tough' in today's society as a role model for younger viewers. The shirt the footballer is wearing is his teams shirt and from the player slightly smiling in the photo, it suggests that he is proud to wear his shirt. The lighting in the picture is bright and vibrant, and this could potentially suggest that despite his reputation he could be a new person with his new team and the bright lighting is suggesting peace and purity. The photo has been taken at a low angle showing the power and dominance of this male as the footballer is made to look as if he is looking down on the reader.

Men's Health is a fitness magazine aimed at men. In this edition Jason Statham is in the main image. Jason is a Hollywood actor involved in many action films. The picture shows Jason as a strong, independent male, someone who would be a role model to many aspiring men who want a muscular body. The pose Jason is in shows his muscular arm and attracts the male audience into wanting to be like him due to how powerful and dominant he looks in the picture. From the films Jason is in, his fans will already know how serious and aggressive he is within his films, and this attitude is reflected in this main image through his serious facial expression and the way he is tensing his upper arm. The T-shirt Jason is wearing is not only fashionable but is also slim-fit to outline his muscles again making him a powerful male and role model for younger men.

NME is a music magazine aimed at older teens. Jake Bugg a young guitarist and singer features in this magazine. Jake has a reputation for looking almost sad when in front of the camera and in this photo this sadness is shown. The photo has been taken at Jake's eye level and is a medium shot. From this type of photo the audience sees Jake at a neutral point of view due to the level it has been taken at. As this photo is a mid shot we can easily view Jake's body language and notice that despite Jake's miserable facial expression he is in a very casual and normal pose whilst leaning against a bar and holding a drink. The Jacket which Jake is wearing is zipped up to the top meaning the viewer can only view Jake from the head upwards; This could potentially suggest the enclosed lifestyle Jake lives as he is a very quiet and laid back person. The photo has been edited to be black and white and a possible connotation of this is that it suits the type of music that Jake plays; Jake is almost seen as a modern day 'mod' in today's society and the black and white represents the age of the type of music he is inspired by. The lighting of the photo is soft and this has been used because if the hard lighting was used as well as the black and white editing, his facial expressions would have been poorly visible. Jake has been presented in this photo as very dependent and tough despite only being 18. Jake has been represented in this way to be a perfect role model for male teenagers. The facial expression of Jake sends a message out to the audience suggesting that despite being only 18, he is capable of standing up for himself and saying his own views and opinions; this is re-enforced in the masthead as it introduces Jake as 'The 18-year old enemy of The X-Factor', this shows Jake has voiced his negative views on the TV show. The location of the bar again shows his independence as we associate bars as being a place for adults, so therefore the Mise-en-scene of the magazine has been well placed to represent Jake a role model and almost a 'teenage hero'.

SHAPE magazine shows celebrities who are exposed as they are only wearing underwear or bikinis. This shows women in a sexualised way however can be a role model for women who aspire that person and want to look particularly like them. In this photo Britney Spears is wearing a White bikini and although the person involved in the magazine is known for her strange behaviour, the white bikini represents innocence and purity. Younger audiences will also look up to this celebrity as although the person is slim, she is not skinny and this is therefore suggesting to young girls that they do not need to be skinny like many of the other role model women who are in the media.

VOUGE magazine is a high end magazine that represents women as powerful and as role models.  In this cover Beyonce is represented as a strong and powerful woman due to the pose she is using. Beyonce is a powerful and independent woman and this is shown on the cover as she is standing alone. The photo has been took with bright lighting making her seem almost angelic like and a true role model for younger audiences. The white on her clothes suggest the innocence and purity of the woman however the black could also re-emphasise the power of this woman and any potential darkness she may hold. Although this photo is clearly edited, it has been edited to represent women in a positive and feministic way and not like a sexualised object.

NUTS is a adult male magazine and is aimed at entertaining the male audience. The picture used shows a celebrity is sexually appealing manner that would attract the male audience. The girl is holding a sexual pose while exposed in underwear; this pose shows that she is not very dominant and more of a sexual object, due to the way she is bending over, making herself more appealing to the male audience.  This sort of image is used as it is sexually appealing to males and would therefore attract them to looking at the magazine and potentially buying it. The bikini the celebrity is wearing is a peachy pink which is a very feminine colour and could represent she is a young and feminine girl which could attract many men. the lighting of the picture is extremely bright and this is done to expose her and show her beauty to the target audience.

Coursework analysis of World soccer

'World Soccer' is a football magazine aimed at a older audience. People will identify this a football magazine for the older audience due to the amount of text on the front cover and lack of colour.  The Masthead of the magazine is the largest text on the page and is designed to attract potential readers. The 'World' bit in the 'World Soccer' masthead is in red which could represent the love that buyers of the magazine have for soccer or football as red is a connotation for love or passion. The main image of the magazine takes up a large amount of the front cover, and has been made that size to attract potential buyers. This particular image has also been chose as although the colours of the front cover are plain the colours on the footballer's kit is bright and vibrant so the customer can view it from a distance; the image is also relevant to the topic of the magazine which is football. This magazine is very unique to other magazines as all of the cover lines are the same size, they are even the same size as the main cover line. The main cover line is only identifiable due to a small text box placed on the main image which informs the reader that the player in the main image has won a specific award. Part of the text of the main cover line is typed in gold which could represent the award that the footballer won. This becomes a reoccurring theme as the cover lines also use gold, but this time to highlight the key information that the magazine producers believe the audience would most likely want to read about. The cover lines have also been organised into three separate boxes on the left side of the front cover, this again suggests that the magazine is for an older audience, as a younger audience based magazine is often very busy and colourful, where as the content of the front cover for this magazine has been organized and does not contain much colour. It is also very unusual for there to be this much text on a front cover, a younger audience would therefore not be interested in this magazine as they would be more interested in bright colours and more pictures. The background of the magazine is plain white, this is effective as the text and pictures of the front cover stand out more and the magazine is therefore more visually appealing for the older audience, who are less interested in bright colours and lots of pictures.

Please take my magazine survey.

Coursework analysis of FourFourTwo

'FourFourTwo' is a football magazine aimed at the older audience. Potential viewers will realise this is a football magazine aimed at the older audience due to the front cover being not as busy and colourful as a magazine aimed at a younger audience such as 'Match of the day'. The layout of this particular magazine cover has been well planned as the main image of the two footballers has left space on the left  side of the cover for the cover lines. The main image is a bold image of two footballers in a casual pose, however the footballer on the left who is in a Brazilian football shirt has been brought forward in the picture to be made the main footballer on the cover. This image has been put on the front cover to attract football fans, and this is why the main image takes up a majority of the front cover, so that potential buyers can see it from a distance. The masthead has been layered under the main image, which suggests to people that the magazine is well known, as the whole of the masthead does not have to be shown for people to recognise which magazine it is. The colour of the masthead is a bright green which links to one of the footballers featuring in the main image as he is wearing a Brazilian football shirt, which has Green armbands and a green collar. The Main cover line of the front cover is the second largest text size on the page as it is informing you of who the two footballers are in the main image. The font of the main cover line is thick and bold, so that it attracts readers and people can view it from a distance, although it is also a formal font suggesting that this magazine is for the older audience. The cover lines are all in matching font but are in different thicknesses or sizes, however they all stand out as the background of the magazine cover is plain white, again suggesting the magazine is for the older audience due to the lack of colour. The header of the front cover which is above the masthead is informing you why the two footballers in the main image are featured. The header is also in yellow text and is on a green background, again linking to the shirt of the footballer in the main image.

Coursework analysis of Match Of The Day

Match of The Day is a football magazine which targets the younger audience. Potential viewers will recognise that this is a magazine targeted for the younger audience due to the bright colours of the front cover and business of the page. The Masthead uses rebus, which is a type of graphological substitution as the 'o' in 'of' has been replaced by a football which links to the theme of the magazine. The masthead is in a large and think font, designed to attract the target audience. The masthead is in white font and has been placed on a red background, designed to make the masthead stand out more, however the red background of the masthead could be a possible connotation of the passion and love that young readers of the magazine have for football. The main image has been placed over the masthead suggesting the magazine is well known as the whole of the masthead does not have to be show for people to know what magazine it is. The main image has taken up a large proportion of the cover as it is aimed at attracting football fans, which is the theme of the magazine. The main cover line is in bright colours designed to attract the magazines target audience which is young football fans, potentially aged 7-13. The main cover has a variety of cover lines, which are aimed at the younger audience. All of the cover lines are attractive due to the vibrant colours of the font and the pictures which would attract the target audience. The cover line and the main cover line are in an effective font as the text has ridges around the letters making the text stand out for the audience. The cover lines also use drop-shadow on a bright background making the text easy to view from a distance. The cover lines are on a bold backgrounds designed to attract younger audiences by using bright and attractive colours, one of which is a free gift of a pack of collect able cards. The gift is there to persuade younger buyers into getting the magazine and therefore getting the pack of cards, some may even buy the magazine for the free gift.  The aspect of getting a free pack of 'Match Attax' has almost become the theme of this magazine as there is even a header above the masthead advertising the fact that this edition of the magazine has a free pack of collect able cards.

Analysis of a female orientated magazine

Female Orientated Magazine

A female orientated magazine such as the one above is designed to be specifically for the female audience. Potential viewers will realise that this is a female's magazine without reading any of the text due to the feminine colours used on the front cover. The colours on the main image match the colours of the background and text, which means there is a colour scheme for this edition of the magazine. The main image is of a young actress, which means the younger audience can relate to the main image and will want to read and discover what the actress has said within the magazine.  The main image is showing the actress in a attractive pose, which has been used to make the readers want try and be like the actress as she is nicely dressed and is a role model for young girls aspiring to be like her. The main cover line states 'Flatten Your Belly', this text has been purposely typed in a thin and attractive font to suggest that women should follow what the magazine says and achieve a flat belly. The majority of the cover lines are very plain as the main image is the item that attracts the reader, the cover lines simply inform the reader of what is in the magazine after they have viewed the main image. Although, the cover lines that are most likely to attract readers are typed in a bold font as these are the most interesting cover lines for potential readers to read. One of the cover lines that says 'Your orgasm guaranteed', has been typed in white font, however it has been placed on a pink slanted box, made almost to look like the smudge of lipstick; This links back to the theme of the magazine and the young actress featured in the main image.

Male orientated magazine cover analysis

Male orientated magazine

A male orientated magazine such as the one above, is designed to entertain the male audience.  Potential viewers can tell that the magazine above is for a male audience, as the woman in the main image is showing a lot of cleavage and is in a sexual pose. The producer of this magazine has used this image to specifically attract the male audience, as the males will be sexually attracted to this image. The image is also layered on top of the Masthead, which suggests that the magazine is well known and therefore, the full masthead does not need to be shown.

The Masthead of the magazine is in red, this could represent sex, which is an aspect of why males buy the magazine as they are attracted to this sexual content. The Font of the magazine also has an aggressive tone, due to the shadowing and tone of the colour which links back to the sex appeal that is intended for the male audience. The cover lines otherwise known as the puffs of the magazine are in a bold font, designed to stand out to the reader, however the font on the main image which is providing the reader with the girl's name in the image, is thin and doesn't stand out as much, which suggests that it is the main image which is designed to attract the readers.

Still Game - Visual, Technical and Audio codes

Still Game

Visual Codes

As the show is based on a group of pensioners, the characters are shown in a stereotypical way. The majority of the characters walk with a slouched posture which represents their age, the characters also dress in old fashioned clothes, and this is important as the pensioners are played by younger actors, so the clothes help the viewer identify who the pensioners are. The movement of the characters is very slow, and sometimes they even hold their back, the purpose of this is to give the viewer the impression that they are pensioners. The dark lighting in places such as the local pub, represent the ageing of the characters as they spend a lot of their time in the same scenery.

Technical Codes

When characters speak individually, the camera zooms in on the speaker, the purpose of this is to allow the viewer to see the speaker's facial expression. Whilst a group have a discussion, the camera moves to a long shot position, the purpose of this movement is to enable the viewer to see the entire groups body language whilst having a conversation. The slow pace of the cameras movement represents the age and slowness of the characters when moving, yet again carrying on the re occurrence that the viewer is being supplied with the idea that these characters are pensioners.

Audio Codes

The programme mainly consists of non-digetic sound, although there are occasional digetic sounds that add humour, making the show more enjoyable for the viewer. During scene changes there is often a voice over of one of the characters speaking, which makes the scene change more entertaining for the viewer as the scene change does not go directly to the scene instead it shows surroundings of the town for a few seconds. There is only music when a character puts some music on themselves so this means there is only non-digetic music, as no music is put in after the programme was filmed.

My analysis of the Inbetweeners.

The Inbetweeners

I believe the Inbetweeners is aimed for people aged between 16-24. I believe that the show is aimed for this age range because, viewers within this age range will be able to relate to the characters within the show, however the show would be unsuitable for people under this age range as the show contains strong language and sexual scenes. Although people above this age range may find the content less humorous as they may not have been previously subject to such content. I believe the show is relatable to the use and gratification of personal identity, as teenagers viewing the show may be able to relate themselves to the characters as an audience, as the characters within the show are going through everyday school life, something of which the audience also goes through.

Purpose
The producers of the show construct the series so that a whole term of school-life is fitted into one series. This means that more entertaining moments will be fitted into the episodes. This therefore makes the show more entertaining as the viewer does not see any of the less-entertaining content, but instead only sees entertaining content, making the show more enjoyable for the viewer.

Some shows cause the viewer to discuss the content with people who have also viewed the text. An example of a form of media that does this is Britain's Got Talent. The show uses two step flow as the active audience will express one another's views  on the content of the text and opinions will be respected. The show often highlights the best moments as it highly constructed, making it more entertaining and shocking for the viewer.

A entertainment TV programme allows viewers to escape from reality and emotional release and enjoy a show. This is a common use/gratification. A media from I can relate this to is Celebrity Juice. Celebrity Juice uses Passive two-step flow as the show involves a variety of celebrities; these celebrities often advertise a new book or film they have coming out, so this advertisement then makes the viewer want to go away and buy this film or book.

Some programmes supply the audience with information, this type of information varies with the type of show.  Match of the day for example, supplies viewers with the latest football news and scores, replays are showed and the games are analysed by the game's experts.  Match of the day is a two step flow show as football fans will discuss the latest football news and scores amongst other football fans and the fans will accept others opinions.

Personal Identity

Personal identity is when the audience identify themselves as part of the audience. An example of a show that represents my personal identity is Waterloo Road. I can relate to Waterloo Road as It is based on students in school and I myself am still in school. I can also relate to some of the character as I share the same hobbies as some of the characters, such as playing guitar and football. This programme links to the cultivation theory as repeated exposure will make the audience less sensitive to the show.

Handicap and Events/Issues

Handicap

All physical, mental and cultural disabilities are either shown positively or negatively within the media. The main character in Avatar (2009) is physically disabled as he is paralysed from the waist down. This portrayal of disability is shown in a negative way as the character often makes it clear throughout the film he desires to have his legs back; Other characters within the film also see the character as 'weaker' and state this through comments to one another in the film. The viewer gets the impression from hearing these comments, that the disabled character is being bullied, and therefore is being shown in a negative way.

Events or Issues

Events or issues are show in either a negative or positive way often depending on the seriousness or extent of the event. For example, the attack on 9/11 is represented negatively throughout the media due to the horrific scenes that occurred. 'World Trade Centre' negatively represents the attack as it goes in to detail and shows the extent of the attack, through the eyes of a victim within the tower. 'The Dictator' however, includes a joke about 911. The film includes a large amount of controversial jokes and references about religion and serious events which could be extremely offensive for many viewers, although the film can be entertaining for viewers who enjoy dark humour.

Age and Sexuality

Age

Age is shown in a variety of ways within the media. Older people for example, are shown in a negative way in the Scottish Comedy series 'Still Game'. Still Game focuses on two Glaswegian pensioners in a lower class part of Glasgow. The show shows the couple in a stereotypical, yet comical way, as the couple are often 'set in their ways' and are very grumpy towards the younger members of society. Although the show does show the couple in some positive ways as they are always there for each other and enjoy socialising with other member of the society such as the Asian shopkeeper in the local newsagents.

Sexuality

http://sabotagetimes.com/reportage/pro-footballer-speaks-its-the-media-who-keep-gay-players-in-the-closet/

Sexuality is shown is many different ways in the media. The article above is from a previous footballer and blames the media for Gay footballers not wanting to 'come out'. Therefore this article presents sexuality in the media in a very negative way as it is blaming the media for the cause of footballers not wanting to admit they are gay.

Religion

Religion, Race, Region

Religion, Race and Region are all shown in many different ways in the media. Race for example is shown is a variety of different ways in the American Horror TV series, 'The Walking Dead'. Glenn Rhee is a young Chinese male who came to the USA when he was young. After the infection struck he discovered the group of survivors and has been a member ever since. Glenn is represented in both a negative and positive way. The camp often use Glenn as 'bait' and send him out on cruel and unfair tasks/missions such as the one shown at 2:18 in the video. However, Glenn is a valued character in the series and as the series goes on he becomes more valuable to the group as his confidence grows. This series shows that race can be shown in a variety of ways in the media, and it often depends on the type of media.

Class

Class

-Upper Class
-Middle Class
-Lower Class
-Under Class

Class is represented in many different ways within the media, and is often shown in either a negative or positive way. The Royle Family for example, represents the lower class in a very negative way. This representation is comical for many viewers, although shows the lower class in a very stereotypical way. The lower class family are often stereotyped as not working a lot and often living off incoming benefits. This is often shown in the show as many of the family members do not work. Overall, the Royle family is a good example for showing the negative portrayal of the working and lower class in the media.
